Summer Book Lists
All students have required summer reading and an assignment to accompany it. Below is only the list of required reading. The assignments were sent home in June. The office has copies.
Kindergarten: Very Hungry Caterpillar (Eric Carle), Gilberto and the Wind (Marie Hall Ets), Rag Coat (Lauren Mills), and Bear Shadow (Frank Asch) First Grade: I Need a Lunch Box (Caines) and three other titles from the approved list sent home by Mrs. Harrell Second Grade: Students will read three books from three different authors- William Steig, Kevin Henkes, and Tomie dePaola. Please choose one work from each author. Third Grade: Wayside School is Falling Down (Louis Sachar) Fourth Grade: Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing (Judy Blume) Fifth Grade: Dear Mr. Henshaw (Beverly Cleary), Brainstorm! the Stories of Twenty American Kid Inventors (Tom Tucker), and one book from the list of five choices (assignment three in the packet) Sixth Grade: Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH (Robert O'Brien) and Outrageous Women of Ancient Times (Vicki Leon) Seventh Grade: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens (Sean Covey), Absolutely Normal Chaos (Sharon Creech) and The Golden Hour (Maya Williams) Eighth Grade: The Jungle (Upton Sinclair) and Maximilian Kolbe, saint of Auschwitz (Elaine Murray Stone, ISBN 0-88489-862-8) * All 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students must purchase a specific bible for religion class, Break through! The Bible for Young Catholics (ISBN 0-88489-862-8). It can be purchased through this website, at the Shrine (202.526.1287) or at Newman's bookstore (202.526.1039). * Remember, there are assignments that accompany each book.
